One of the symbolic events of December in Kyoto is Koi-age (鯉揚げ, carp catching) at Hirosawanoike (広沢池) pond. Kyoto people know the arrival of winter when they watch the news of this event on TV or papers.
Since the Heian (平安) period, the Hirosawanoike pond has been very famous as the best spot for Otsukimi (お月見, moon viewing). As they reduce the water level of the pond, many big-fat carps and crucians appear to the surface and splash in the mesh. They were the juveniles released in last spring and now has become ready to be eaten.
Many people including professional chefs come visit the pond to purchase the fish. It's already December...Oh, time flies.....
