ANKAKE UDON at Shinodaya

It's cold everyday. You'll never know how cold it is unless you live here. Whenever it is severely freezing, Ankake Udon (あんかけうどん, noodles in thick and hot starchy sauce), does the trick.

Shinodaya (しのだや), established more than 100 years ago, offers good dishes at reasonable prices. The Ankake Udon here, which I love, is really a simple dish. Udon noodles in thick boiling soup, topped with grated ginger, with no other ingredients. It tastes delicious and warms you up nicely. I think the simplicity is the key. Aside from it, there are many other warm dishes in Kyoto, uniquely developed because of its severe winter. Akane Kibune
