Uji Bridge in Japanese History

Akane Kibune

We often hear from our customers that they would like to visit Uji (宇治, a city located at the south of Kyoto) city.

For many of my readers, Byodoin Temple (平等院) established in the Heian (平安) period must be the most famous place in Uji. However, Uji was already a developed and civilized city far earlier than that. In the Asuka (飛鳥) period, namely in 646 A.D., the bridge over the Uji river (宇治川) was built in response to the increment of the population and the logistics.

The bridge, repeatedly destroyed and washed away by the rapid flow, is also known as the site of many legendary battles. In addition, Uji is also famous as the place of long romantic story called The Tale of Genji (源氏物語, Genji Monogatari).

Please visit the Uji bridge and feel the eternal flow of the history.
