Azalea Flowers at Yasaka Shrine West Gate

Akane Kibune

When you step into Yasaka Shrine (八坂神社) from the Shijo (四条) street, you always go through this Roumon (楼門, two-storied gate). The Roumon was destroyed by fire in the Onin War (応仁の乱, a civil war that lasted from 1467 to 1477, during the Muromachi period) and reconstructed in the Meiji (明治) period.

Every time I go under this beautiful gate, I feel as if I'm getting close the god. The deity here is said to be responsive to prayers for illness prevention.

In this season, azalea flowers are fully blooming in front of the Roumon. I was captivated for a while by the beauty of the vivid pink flowers.
