Suirokaku, a Raised Aqueduct

Akane Kibune

In the premises of Nanzen-ji (南禅寺) temple, the Suirokaku (水路閣, a raised aqueduct) was built in order to complete the Biwako Sosui Bunsen (琵琶湖疏水分線, a branch of Biwako Sosui Canal) in the Meiji (明治) period.

At the time of construction, it was highly controversial because its Western style structure was not regarded as suitable for the sacred place of Buddhism. However, now the magnificent brick architecture is quietly standing there in perfect harmony with other buildings and the gardens of the temple. The Suirokaku, a treasure of Kyoto with full of exotic atmosphere, attracts a lot of visitors from all over the world.
