The Monument of the Former Residence of Okubo Toshimichi

The story of Sego-don (西郷どん), the NHK Taiga drama (大河ドラマ) 2018, has become more and more interesting with episodes of historical importance in the Bakumatu (幕末) era. As a huge fun of the era, I am so excited.

By the way, have you ever heard of the name, Okuba Toshimichim (大久保利通)? He is a former feudal retainer of the Satsuma (薩摩) domain/politician and listed as Bakumatu Ishin Sanketsu (幕末維新三傑, the three contributors to the Meiji Restoration) along with Saigo Takamori (西郷隆盛) and Kido Takayoshi (木戸孝允).

As I have introduced in this blog before, the remains of residence of Satsuma Domain (旧薩摩藩邸跡) is within the campus of Doshisha University (同志社大学), and Okubo's residence from 1866 to 1868 was also located nearby.

As I saw the monument, I imagined how tough to survive the rapid transition from the Edo (江戸) to the Meiji Restoration (明治維新), risking his life for the Saccho-domei(薩長同盟, The Satsuma-Choshu Alliance) and Toubaku (討幕, anti-shogunate movement).

The history of the Bakumatsu era is truly exciting.
