Kobo-ichi (弘法市), also known as Kobo-san (弘法さん、Mr. Kobo), is a market within the premises of Toji (東寺) temple held on 21st of each month that falls on the date of Kobo-Daishi's (弘法大師, Saint Kobo) passing. Many people visit this market and enjoy seeking for lucky finds and good buys of antiques, foods, and handicrafts.
Especially the one in December called Shimai-Kobo (終い弘法, the final Kobo) is a signature winter event in Kyoto attracting large number of visitors. People worship the statue of Kobo, expressing their gratitude for enjoyment of sound health in this year. Here, lots of shops stand in rows, and people shop around in preparation for the New Year's feast. The scenery of the market and the temple is so like Kyoto.
I wish you all a very happy New Year.
